Birdwatching on Lake Garda: A Guide to Observing Birds in the Lower Lake Area

Lower Lake Garda is known for its villages, beaches and vineyards, but simply changing pace is enough to discover a different landscape. Reed beds, shores, small stretches of water and open fields are habitats frequented by waterbirds and migratory species. Birdwatching allows you to observe them without rushing: it requires no particular skill, only attention, distance and a little silence. And here, in our large park by the lake, you will find one of the most beautiful places to observe the local wildlife — and why not, even from the balcony of one of our lake-view rooms.

Autumn is a particularly interesting time. The days become quieter, the light is softer and migratory movements invite you to look beyond the surface of the lake. This guide offers a simple and respectful approach, suitable even for those who have never used binoculars before. In its southern part, the vast expanse of Lake Garda meets smaller-scale environments: vegetated shores, agricultural areas, canals and wetlands. This variety provides opportunities for different species to rest, feed and find shelter. There is no need to know all their names straight away: learning to distinguish a silhouette, a behaviour or a call is already a way of becoming part of the landscape. Wetlands are particularly valuable because they are home to resident, migratory and wintering waterbirds. They are also delicate environments, where uncontrolled access can cause disturbance. For this reason, responsible birdwatching means staying on permitted paths, using public observation points and accepting that some encounters will take place from a distance.

Laghetto del Frassino: a wetland worth discovering

South of Peschiera del Garda, just a few kilometres from our hotel, Laghetto del Frassino is recognised by the Veneto Region as a Natura 2000 site and Special Protection Area. It is a small lake of glacial origin set in a heavily frequented area, yet it preserves important habitats for birdlife. Its importance does not lie in spectacular scenery, but precisely in its ability to provide water, reed beds and tranquillity in a highly populated area. Before visiting, it is advisable to check access points, any restrictions and the condition of the paths on site. Some areas may be private or subject to specific rules. Birdwatching does not give permission to cross fences, enter fields or approach the shore outside the designated paths. A good observation point is one that allows you to watch without altering the animals’ behaviour. This location can also be easily reached by bicycle, by renting one of the electric bikes available to hotel guests at reception.

What you can observe

In a lakeside environment, you may encounter ducks, grebes, coots, moorhens, herons and small passerines associated with reed beds. The species present vary with the seasons and the conditions of the day. It is best to avoid lists presented as guaranteed sightings: uncertainty is part of the experience. A successful outing may simply mean spending a few minutes watching the way a grebe dives or a heron waits motionless.

When to go: morning, light and seasons

The early morning hours are often ideal: there is less activity around, the temperature is pleasant and many species are active. Late afternoon can also offer beautiful light, but in autumn it is important to plan your return carefully. After rain, paths and verges can be muddy; in strong winds the water becomes choppy, bird calls are harder to hear and it is more difficult to hold binoculars steady. In autumn and winter, migratory and wintering birds become particularly interesting to observe. In spring, breeding activity increases and keeping your distance becomes even more important. In summer, the heat makes short outings very early in the morning preferable. Every season has something to teach us, provided that waiting does not turn into an insistent search for a sighting.

What to bring on your first outing

  • Lightweight binoculars, easier to use for long periods than heavy equipment.
  • Clothing in discreet colours, footwear suitable for the terrain and a waterproof layer.
  • Water, sun protection and a small bird guide, either printed or digital.
  • A notebook to record the time, habitat, behaviour and weather conditions.
  • A phone set to silent, useful for maps and environmental photographs without getting too close.

You do not need a telephoto lens to get started. Binoculars teach you to observe; photography can come later. If you use a camera, it is better to miss a shot than to leave the path or cause an animal to move away.

How to observe without disturbing

The first sign to watch for is the animal’s behaviour. If it stops feeding, gives alarm calls, repeatedly moves away or changes direction to avoid us, we are too close. The right response is to step back calmly. Speaking quietly, moving slowly and limiting the amount of time spent in the same place reduces disturbance. Food or recorded calls should never be used to attract birds. Do not look for nests, move vegetation or publicly share the precise locations of sensitive species. Dogs should be kept according to local regulations, with particular care near reed beds and shorelines. All waste, including organic waste, should be taken away with us.

Silence is a tool, not a strict rule

Being silent does not mean making the outing rigid. It means giving yourself the chance to listen. A repeated call, the beating of wings or movement among the reeds often reveals a presence before you can see it. For children, it can become a simple game: counting the different sounds they hear for one minute without immediately trying to name them.

A slow itinerary, without collecting stops

From Lugana, you can dedicate half a day to birdwatching in the lower Lake Garda area, choosing just one environment and allowing yourself plenty of time. Before setting off, check the weather and accessibility; once there, use only public roads and paths and follow the available signs. A short stop along the lake can complete the outing, comparing the species seen in the wetland with those that frequent the open water.

How to identify a bird without being an expert

Start with the most noticeable characteristics: size, shape of the beak, length of the legs, profile in flight and the habitat it frequents. Then observe colours and markings, bearing in mind that light, distance, age and season can be misleading. Taking note of behaviour is very useful: does it swim with its body high or low in the water? Does it dive? Does it walk in shallow water? Does it remain perched among the reeds? If the identification remains uncertain, that is perfectly fine. Guides and apps can help afterwards, especially when your notes are precise.

Seeing Lake Garda from a different perspective

Birdwatching adds depth to a stay because it teaches us to notice what normally remains in the background. Its value lies not in the number of species observed, but in the quality of our attention. A protected wetland, a reed bed and a quiet shoreline remind us that the lake is also a living system, crossed by seasonal movements that begin very far away. Taking home a short list, a few notes and the memory of a behaviour calmly observed is already a rewarding result. On Lake Garda, sometimes the most interesting journey begins when we stop looking for a view and learn to wait.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time of year for birdwatching on Lake Garda?
Autumn and winter are particularly interesting for migration and wintering birds; spring and summer offer different kinds of activity. Early morning and late afternoon are often the quietest times of day.

Do I need professional equipment?
No. To get started, all you need is a pair of lightweight binoculars, suitable clothing, a guide and a notebook. The ability to remain still and observe is more important than a camera.

Is Laghetto del Frassino a protected area?
It is a Natura 2000 site and a Special Protection Area. Before visiting, you should check access points and local regulations, always remaining on permitted paths.

How can I tell if I am disturbing a bird?

Lake Garda at Sunrise and Sunset: How to Experience Sirmione During the Best Hours of Summer

In summer, Lake Garda changes its appearance several times over the course of a single day. The middle hours of the day are filled with light, movement and heat; sunrise and sunset, on the other hand, bring a slower rhythm, softer colours and often more pleasant temperatures. For those staying in Lugana or Sirmione, learning to make the most of these moments can transform a holiday, especially during the busiest tourist periods. Experiencing Lake Garda at sunrise and sunset is not simply about chasing the perfect photograph. It means choosing the right times, walking at a more leisurely pace, avoiding some of the crowds and discovering details that often go unnoticed during the busier hours: the silhouette of the peninsula, the sound of the water, the boats returning to shore, the vineyards illuminated by the low light.

Why sunrise and sunset are precious moments on Lake Garda

During the summer, the early morning hours and the evening have a practical advantage: they allow you to get around in more pleasant temperatures and with considerably less traffic. This is especially true for walks, short itineraries on foot, journeys by bicycle, car or taxi, and visits to the historic centre of Sirmione. There is also another advantage, less measurable but very real: the atmosphere. At sunrise, the lake is quieter, the colours are delicate and the day seems to unfold with a sense of calm. At sunset, the light softens, the shores take on gentler tones and the landscape invites you to slow down. These are ideal hours for those seeking a more intimate experience without giving up the beauty of the surroundings. We recommend checking the times of sunrise and sunset and making your way to the beach at Punta Staffalo in the historic centre, a place little known to tourists where you can take truly unforgettable photographs.

Where to go at sunrise starting from Lugana

Lugana is an excellent starting point for a morning walk, as it allows you to stay close to the water without having to plan any major journeys. A walk along the lake in the early hours lets you begin the day at a leisurely pace, watching the area slowly awaken before the tourist traffic increases. You can start from our hotel and follow the lakeside promenade that runs behind the church of Lugana towards Peschiera: peaceful and pleasant, with the lake always beside you. Those who enjoy venturing a little further can consider setting off early for Sirmione, planning transport and timing according to the season; it is about 5 kilometres away. Morning is the best time to reach the historic centre in greater tranquillity, stroll through its streets, make your way towards Scaliger Castle and enjoy the landscape before the hottest hours of the day.

Sirmione in the Morning: What to See at a More Relaxed Pace

The historic centre of Sirmione is one of the most popular and visited places on the southern shores of Lake Garda. This is why timing really does make a difference. Arriving early allows you to observe the village more closely: the stonework, the glimpses of the water, the boats, the façades, the narrow passageways that become much busier during the middle of the day. There are countless corners where you can capture an unforgettable photograph: if photography is your passion, take a look at the Municipality of Sirmione website as well, as numerous themed photography competitions are held throughout the area.

A morning visit can also be simple and enjoyable: enter the historic centre, stroll towards Scaliger Castle, stop for a coffee, then walk towards the tip of the peninsula if the temperature allows. There is no need to fill every minute. Especially in summer, a memorable experience often comes from a light, well-paced itinerary.

The peninsula is easily reached by bus (the stop is in front of our hotel), or on foot after taking a shuttle bus from the centre of Colombare.

Sunset on Lake Garda: how to choose the right spot

Sunset on Lake Garda is not the same from every viewpoint. The choice depends on the kind of experience you are looking for. Those who enjoy walking can stay along the shore and follow the changing light. Those who prefer a quieter pause can find a place to sit and simply let the landscape do the rest. From Lugana, the most appealing aspect is often its proximity: there is no need to travel far to enjoy a beautiful evening moment. The low light over the water and the outlines of the opposite shore creates a pleasant atmosphere even during a short walk, perhaps before dinner or after a day spent between the lake, sightseeing and relaxation.

Practical local tips for sunrise and sunset

For sunrise, preparing comfortable shoes, water and a simple outline of your route the night before will save you from having to make decisions early in the morning. It is best to choose easy itineraries, especially if you want to return in time for breakfast. For sunset, on the other hand, it is worth checking the exact time the sun will set and setting off a little in advance: arriving when the light is almost gone greatly reduces the pleasure of the experience. You could also consider a boat trip to discover another town on Lake Garda from the water: every destination has beautiful pedestrian streets where you can enjoy a relaxing stroll. Another piece of advice is not to focus everything on a single panoramic viewpoint. Lake Garda is also best experienced in motion: just a few minutes’ walk along the shore can reveal different, less crowded perspectives. The important thing is to leave room for pleasant surprises, without turning every outing into a checklist to complete.

A slower holiday, without missing a thing

Choosing sunrise and sunset does not mean giving up the best-known destinations. It means experiencing them with greater attention, making the most of your holiday time and adapting it to the summer climate. Lugana and Sirmione have much to offer even when the itinerary remains simple: a walk, a different light, a well-chosen pause can be enough to make a day memorable. In August especially, the secret is to manage your energy well. The lake rewards those who know how to alternate activity and rest, sightseeing and contemplation, the historic centre and the lakeshore. The best hours of summer are often the quietest ones: you simply need to recognise them and give yourself the time to truly experience them. If you have any questions or would like some advice, our receptionists will be happy to help with genuine local tips and up-to-date maps for your itineraries. P.S. We also offer brand-new electric bikes for hire, which can help you discover as much as possible in the surrounding area!

Sirmione without a car: practical ideas for a relaxing half-day starting from Lugana

Visiting Sirmione without a car is often a smart choice, especially during the busiest months. The historic centre is compact, distances are easy to cover at a leisurely pace, and the landscape naturally invites you to slow down. Starting from Lugana, at the Lugana Parco al Lago & Wine Hotel, a well-planned half-day is enough to experience the lake with ease, avoiding complicated parking and unnecessary travel. Sirmione reveals its true charm when you don’t rush through it: a walk, a break in the shade, a glance across the water, a carefully chosen visit. Even just a few hours can become a complete experience when enjoyed at the right pace.

Why choose to visit Sirmione without a car

During the high season, driving to the most central areas of the town can take longer than expected. Traffic, the search for parking, and the summer heat can make a visit less enjoyable, when it is really meant to be experienced at a relaxed pace. Planning a half-day without a car helps reduce stress and allows you to enjoy every moment more fully. In our opinion, starting from Lugana makes it possible to approach the visit in a gentler and more relaxed way. You can choose to reach the historic centre by combining a walk with public transport, a taxi, or seasonal shuttle services, always checking the latest schedules and availability. Our reception team will be happy to provide you with all the information you need. Please also bear in mind that the Lake Garda area is not particularly well served by taxis, so waiting times can sometimes be long. The simplest rule is also the best one: plan ahead, set off early, or choose the late afternoon, when both the light and the temperature are at their most pleasant.

First stop: the rhythm of Lugana

Lugana has a character all its own, quite different from the historic centre of Sirmione. It is more relaxed, more authentic, closer to the vineyards and the quieter shores of the lake. Before heading towards the heart of the peninsula, it is worth taking a few moments to embrace the pace of the area: enjoy breakfast overlooking the lake, take a short walk, or simply pause to admire the morning light reflecting on the water. This first moment also helps set the tone for the day. Comfortable shoes, water, sun protection and a light bag are practical essentials in our area. During the warmer months, comfort is not just a detail—it is what allows you to enjoy your visit at a leisurely pace without getting tired. You can enjoy a beautiful walk from Lugana to the historic centre, or, if you prefer, stop and take one of the many shuttle buses that run along the route to reach the castle more quickly.

Towards the historic centre: arriving at a relaxed pace

The historic centre of Sirmione is its most iconic area, but also the one that requires the most care during the busiest days. For this reason, it is best to plan your arrival outside the peak hours, when the sun is at its highest and the streets are more crowded. An early morning visit offers a quieter atmosphere and unforgettable views of the lake for taking beautiful photographs, while the late afternoon rewards visitors with softer light. Once you reach the historic centre, our advice is not to rush from one attraction to another. Instead, enter at a leisurely pace and allow the landscape to reveal itself gradually. Scaliger Castle, the charming streets, the lakefront views, and the small detours—such as the lakeside walk starting from Spiaggia delle Muse—all work beautifully because they are so close to one another.

What to see in half a day

With only half a day available, it is better to choose two or three experiences rather than trying to see everything, perhaps leaving something for a future visit to explore the town more thoroughly. A possible itinerary includes entering the historic centre, strolling through Scaliger Castle, taking a break in one of the quieter streets, and enjoying the lake views from the Grotte di Catullo. Those with more energy can continue towards the panoramic areas of the peninsula, always considering the time available, the temperature, and the number of visitors. The Grotte di Catullo are one of the area’s highlights, but they require time and should be visited without haste. If you only have half a day, it may be better to save them for another occasion, as they are located at the top of one of the three hills that form the peninsula. Since cars are not allowed, they can only be reached on foot or by the tourist train.

A break, water and shade: the practical side

On summer days, a pleasant visit is also built around taking breaks. Stopping does not mean wasting time—it means preserving your energy. A pause for a drink, a light lunch, an ice cream or a coffee can become part of the experience, especially if enjoyed away from the busiest times. It is advisable to alternate between sun and shade, plan your route in advance using a map, and ask our reception team for advice. Avoid long walks during the hottest hours and always allow yourself some flexibility. If the historic centre feels too crowded, you can shorten your visit and spend more time by the lake and on its beautiful beaches, such as Lido delle Bionde, or return to Lugana for a quieter break and enjoy the lovely beach behind the village church.

A possible 4-hour itinerary

For a relaxing morning, you could start with breakfast in Lugana at La Fenice, the area’s iconic Liberty-style café, then head towards the historic centre on foot or by bus. Spend around an hour and a half wandering through the castle, the picturesque streets and the lakeside viewpoints, enjoy a short break (avoiding the expensive tourist ice creams that are not artisan-made), and return before the hottest part of the day. For an afternoon visit, you could have lunch at La Lugana Trattoria, arrive in the historic centre as the light softens, stroll without hurry and finish with a boat tour departing from the right-hand side of the castle, offering beautiful views of Scaliger Castle from the lake. This itinerary does not require strict timing; it is simply a suggestion. The important thing is to check transport services, weather conditions and actual travel times on the day of your visit. Our reception team will be happy to assist you with up-to-date information, maps and many other ideas for discovering the area, including our electric bicycles available for hire. Lake Garda changes dramatically between weekdays and weekends, between low and high season, and between morning and evening—and for us, it is always magical.

The value of returning with a little less. Whenever possible, travelling without a car changes the way you experience a place. You walk more, notice more details and naturally become more respectful of your surroundings. In Sirmione, this approach works perfectly because the beauty lies not only in the destination itself, but also in the views, the lakeshore, the changing light and the quiet pauses along the way. Spending half a day without a car may seem like a practical decision, but it is also a different way of travelling: less forced planning, greater attention to the landscape and, even better, exploring by electric bicycle (available for hire at our reception), an environmentally friendly choice that encourages a slower rhythm of travel. Starting from Lugana, the historic centre is only about 4 kilometres away, while the return journey brings you back to a quieter area where the lake resumes its own peaceful rhythm.

Why we chose Lugana: our history of lake, wine, and hospitality

When people ask us what makes the Lugana Parco al Lago & Wine Hotel special, we never have a single answer. Perhaps because we’re more than just a hotel on Lake Garda. We’re a place that speaks to a region, a family, and a lifestyle rooted in the Lugana area and the waters of Lake Garda. Those who come to us are often looking for a hotel in Lugana di Sirmione, perhaps a lakeside property where they can enjoy a few days of relaxation. What they discover, however, is something more: an experience of relaxation, sunsets, good wine, and family authenticity.

A hotel on Lake Garda where the lake truly takes center stage

Our two hotels are located directly on the shores of Lake Garda, facing each other, with a large private green park that reaches right down to the water and a pier that extends into the water, overlooking the Sirmione peninsula. Here, the lake isn’t just a view from the window. It’s the place to stroll in the morning, relax in the afternoon—perhaps with a dip in the park’s pool—and be amazed by the colors of the sunset. Many guests choose us because they want a hotel with direct private access to the lake, away from the crowds yet close to the beauty of Sirmione. It’s precisely this balance between tranquility and strategic location that makes the stay special.

In the heart of the Lugana region

We are in Lugana di Sirmione, one of the areas most loved by wine and food lovers. Our connection to this region is part of our identity. The vineyards surrounding the town tell a story of tradition, family, and a passion for wine. The Dal Cero family has also been working on this land since 1939, producing wines at the renowned Ca’ dei Frati winery, a global leader in Lugana DOC. This is why we also call ourselves a Wine Hotel on Lake Garda: because we believe that getting to know a region means savoring it, meeting it, and experiencing it through its excellence. And we do this by offering unique and authentic food and wine experiences. Tastings, cellar tours, and wine tours with the family’s sommelier allow our guests to discover the most authentic soul of Lugana.

Hospitality born from a family

Behind every stay are people, stories, and thoughtful touches you can’t see in photographs. For generations, our family has welcomed travelers from all over the world with the same philosophy: making every guest feel at home, even in a special place. We like to think that true luxury today is time. Time for breakfast overlooking the lake, a stroll in the park, a glass of Lugana at sunset, a leisurely dinner just a few meters from the lake, or a bike ride in the surrounding area with our e-bike rental.

La Fenice: the Taste of Garda

Complementary to our hotel, at the same address, are two gastronomic offerings: the La Fenice bistro and La Lugana Trattoria, which represent another important part of our history. The cuisine showcases the flavors of the Garda region, taking guests on a gastronomic journey that combines tradition and creativity. Dining on the lake, just steps from the water, means experiencing Garda with all your senses. It’s an experience that many of our guests remember as one of the highlights of their holiday.

A starting point for discovering Garda

Staying at the Lugana Parco al Lago & Wine Hotel also means being in an ideal location for visiting Sirmione, as well as Desenzano del Garda, Peschiera, Verona, Brescia, and the area’s main attractions. Many choose our hotel as a base for exploring the southern part of Lake Garda, alternating days dedicated to exploring the area with moments of relaxation in the park and on the lake. Gardaland is also about ten kilometers from our hotel.

Our way of welcoming

We never wanted to be just a hotel. We wanted to create a place where the lake, wine, nature, and hospitality could come together in an authentic way. Every day, we continue to care for this little corner of Garda with the same passion as always, because we believe that the most beautiful holidays are those that leave a lasting impression. And that’s exactly what we hope to offer to those who choose to stay here, even if just for a few days.

From the panoramic viewpoint, you can continue towards the tower of San Martino della Battaglia, along a further stretch of about 7 km.

Tower of San Martino della Battaglia – 7 km

The route to the tower of San Martino passes through the typical Garda morainic hills, a smooth route suitable for everyone. The route alternates between vineyards, secondary roads, and stretches immersed in the quiet countryside. The tower dominates the landscape rich with vineyards surrounding Ca’ dei Frati, offering a fascinating panoramic viewpoint, while the Ossuary commemorates the historic Battle of San Martino, linked to the Italian Risorgimento. The marked point is located among the Ca’ dei Frati vineyards, perfect for a quick stop or a scenic snack before returning, thanks to the brunch basket you can request at reception before your departure.

Castellaro Lagusello – Hilly Itinerary

For those seeking a more varied route, Castellaro Lagusello is one of the most fascinating destinations in the moraine hinterland. The route begins on the southern shores of Lake Garda and gradually leads toward a greener, more secluded landscape, crossing rolling hills, secondary roads, and charming rural views. Arriving in the medieval village offers a unique atmosphere: ancient walls, stone alleys, and the famous heart-shaped lake make this stop ideal for a relaxing break and photo opportunities. The panoramic viewpoint indicated on the cycle path surrounding the village offers spectacular views of the entire area.

Borghetto sul Mincio – 20 km

Among the most popular itineraries among hotel guests is undoubtedly the one to Borghetto sul Mincio, covering approximately 20 km. The route follows the Gardesana road towards Peschiera, passing through San Benedetto and then following the Mincio River along one of the most beautiful cycle paths in the area.

The route is mostly flat and very smooth, also ideal for e-bikes and relaxed cycle touring. The final kilometers lead cyclists through rows of poplars, green meadows, and glimpses of water until they reach Borghetto, with its historic mills suspended over the river. Our recommended starting point is the Visconti Bridge, which offers a complete view of the village.

Church of San Pietro in Monzambano – 11 km

This approximately 11 km route leads to a more secluded and quiet setting, away from the usual tourist destinations. The road gradually moves away from the lake, crossing countryside, tree-lined paths, and hills immersed in nature. The Church of San Pietro welcomes visitors with its simple architecture and medieval history, offering the perfect place for a regenerating break during the journey.

Ca’ dei Frati – 1.5 km

Just 1.5 km from the hotel is the historic Ca’ dei Frati winery, easily reached with a short bike ride or on foot. Guests can stop by for a free tasting of the family’s wines during the winery’s opening hours, booking online at www.cadeifrati.it.

The perfect end: dinner at a trattoria

After a day spent exploring vineyards, cycling paths, and historic villages, the best way to end the experience is with a lake-view dinner at our La Lugana Trattoria. The Lower Garda area offers authentic cuisine, perfect for refueling after the ride: Valeggio tortelli, grilled meat and fish, locally sourced cured meats, lake fish, seasonal vegetarian dishes, and of course, a fine glass of Lugana I Frati di Ca’ dei Frati. A simple yet authentic finale, capable of transforming a day on the bike into a true local experience. Download our map with Google Maps points below by tapping the QR codes:

The thermal baths of Sirmione: history and benefits of the thermal water of Lake Garda

Sirmione is famous worldwide not only for its castle, the historic center on the strip of land in the water, and the Grottoes of Catullus, but also for its unique thermal waters, used for centuries for personal wellness and body care.
Staying on Lake Garda also means allowing yourself a relaxing break at the thermal baths of Sirmione, easily reachable from Lugana. For those staying at the Wine Hotel Lugana Parco al Lago or at the Hotel Lugana Parco al Lago, the thermal baths are truly just a few minutes away, perfect for a day dedicated to wellness or for thermal treatments prescribed by a doctor.

The origin of the thermal baths of Sirmione

The beneficial properties of the thermal water of Sirmione have been known since ancient times. Already in Roman times, the peninsula was considered a special place for its climate and its waters. This is evidenced by the presence of the remains of a Roman villa dated between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD, the so-called Grottoes of Catullus. However, the Romans, contrary to what is usually thought, did not yet exploit the potential of the thermal water of Sirmione because the source was actually discovered many centuries later.

The thermal spring originates over 2,000 meters deep, where rainwater makes a very long underground journey through the rocks of the mountains. During this journey it becomes enriched with sulfur and minerals, then emerging near the peninsula of Sirmione at a temperature of about 69°C. The first demonstration of the presence of the hot water aquifer was done by an ingenious diver, Procopio, who managed to cook raw eggs, bringing them to the surface ready to be eaten hard-boiled.

This water is known as salsobromoiodic sulfur water, a rare composition that makes it particularly valuable for wellness.

Sulfur water of Garda

The thermal water of Sirmione is among the richest in Europe in sulfur, bromine, and iodine, natural elements that contribute to its therapeutic effects.
This particular composition makes it ideal for:

  • the wellness of the respiratory system
  • muscle relaxation
  • skin regeneration
  • improvement of circulation

The natural warmth of the water, combined with the minerals present, creates an experience that unites care and relaxation, immersed in the unique scenery of Lake Garda.

The benefits of the thermal experience

In addition to therapeutic properties, the thermal baths of Sirmione are today also a place dedicated to wellness and relaxation.
Among thermal pools, wellness paths, and lake-view relaxation areas, a day at the thermal baths allows you to:

  • reduce stress and tension
  • improve sleep
  • relax muscles
  • regenerate mind and body

The warm waters, especially in the cooler months, create a pleasant contrast with the lake air, making the experience even more evocative, which you can enjoy just a few kilometers from our facilities.

The two thermal experiences of Sirmione

Those visiting Sirmione can choose between two different thermal experiences.

Terme Virgilio located in Colombare di Sirmione (reachable on foot from our hotels, about 500 meters)
Located in the Colombare area, they are easily reachable from Lugana.

Here you can mainly find therapeutic paths and medical treatments, dedicated to health and body care.

Aquaria Thermal SPA (reachable by bus, bicycle, or taxi from our facilities)
Located in the historic center of Sirmione, Aquaria is a true lake-view wellness center, with indoor and outdoor thermal pools, saunas, Turkish baths, and relaxation areas immersed in the Garda landscape.

A stay among lake, wine, and wellness

For those who wish to combine relaxation, nature, and exploration of the territory, staying in the Lugana area is the ideal solution, also to stay away from traffic and the densest tourism that characterizes the historic center, especially during high season periods.

The Wine Hotel Lugana Parco al Lago and the Hotel Lugana Parco al Lago are just a few minutes from the Thermal Baths of Sirmione and represent a perfect starting point for a day dedicated to wellness and thermal treatments.

After a few hours of relaxation in the thermal waters, it is pleasant to return to the lake, walk among the Lugana vineyards, or enjoy a glass of wine from Ca’ dei Frati at sunset at La Fenice Bistot or La Lugana Trattoria, where guests can also receive a 5% discount.

An experience that combines wellness, territory, and the atmosphere of Garda.

Vacation in Lugana and Sirmione: 5 features that make this corner of Lake Garda unique.

Choosing a vacation on Lake Garda means choosing light, elegance, and beauty. Choosing Lugana, between Sirmione and the moraine hills means going even deeper: discovering an authentic territory, full of wine, history, nature, and even wellness.

If you’re looking for a hotel in Lugana near the Sirmione peninsula, here are 5 firsts that explain why this destination is worth experiencing—and why the Lugana Parco al Lago Hotel and the Wine Hotel are the ideal starting point.

1. Lugana DOC: one of the great Italian whites, born right here

Lugana is much more than a wine: it is the very soul of the region.

Produced exclusively in the area south of Lake Garda, between Sirmione, Peschiera, and Desenzano, Lugana DOC is made from Turbiana grapes grown on clay soils of glacial and morainic origin. The result is a minerally, elegant white wine, capable of evolving over time.

For those who love wine tourism on Lake Garda, this is one of the most interesting areas in Italy, the birthplace of the first DOC created in Lombardy; Here you’ll find:

  • Historic and contemporary wineries, such as Ca’ dei Frati
  • Special and themed tastings (visit our website in the events section to find out more)
  • Wine tours and local gastronomy on Lake Garda, such as at our restaurants La Lugana Trattoria and La Fenice bistro, with private lake access

Staying at the Wine Hotel also means experiencing this world firsthand, surrounded by vineyards and silence, planning a few days’ vacation immersed in the local culture.

2. Sirmione: one of the most fascinating destinations on Lake Garda

Just minutes from the town of Lugana lies Sirmione, one of the most iconic and unique towns on Lake Garda.

A thin peninsula jutting out into the water, dominated by the Scaligero Castle and the famous Grottoes of Catullus, where the remains of a Roman villa dating back to the 1st century BC are located. and 1st century AD, among the most important Roman archaeological sites in Northern Italy.

Walking through the historic center at sunset, amidst cobbled streets and glimpses of the lake, is an unforgettable experience, especially if done off-season, when the tourist influx is not yet at its peak.

Choosing a hotel near Sirmione, like the Hotel Lugana Parco al Lago and the Wine Hotel, just 4 kilometers from the historic center, yet nestled in the tranquility of the village of Lugana, with a large, relaxing green park on the shores of the lake, allows you to experience the best of both worlds that the area offers: charm and relaxation.

3. One of the mildest microclimates in Italy

Lake Garda creates a unique microclimate that makes this area perfect in every season.

  • Bright and warm springs
  • Always breezy summers
  • Autumns with golden foliage among the vineyards
  • Mild and quiet winters

This climate favors not only viticulture, but also outdoor activities: cycling, lakeside walks, excursions inland, and even yoga sessions on the lake are some of the programs you can find at our properties.

At the Hotel Lugana Parco al Lago and the Wine Hotel, directly overlooking the water in a unique location, with views of Sirmione and its peninsula, the feeling of well-being is immediate: light, air, space, and relaxation.

4. The morainic hills: a unique landscape in southern Garda

Lugana lies on glacial and morainic soils, shaped thousands of years ago. The Garda morainic hills are gentle and harmonious, dotted with vineyards and small rural villages, all waiting to be explored. We can provide all the details for a personalized tour at our reception, which can also be arranged with our rental bicycles.

It’s the ideal place for those seeking:

  • Cycling routes through nature and wine
  • Uncrowded panoramic itineraries, far from the chaos of the city
  • Authentic experiences far from mass tourism, like those offered at the Ca’ dei Frati winery

Time slows down here. And on a vacation, that really makes all the difference.

5. Wellness between the lake and the Sirmione spa

Sirmione is also famous for its natural sulfurous thermal waters, known since Roman times for their beneficial properties.

Just minutes from our hotels are several panoramic spas where you can enjoy a day of pure relaxation, either in the village of Colombare (for a thermal area with medical facilities and therapies) or in Sirmione (where the spa becomes a place of fun and relaxation).

But the true well-being of Lugana goes deeper:

  • a sunrise on the lake
  • a glass of wine at sunset
  • the silence among the vineyards

It’s a form of natural, discreet, authentic luxury that you can also experience with personalized experiences tailored to your needs.

Photographing Lake Garda in Winter: When Silence Becomes Image

There are seasons that demand to be experienced and others that demand to be heard. Winter on Lake Garda belongs to the latter category.

In January, the lake changes its voice. The shores become more intimate, the colors fade, the air becomes clear and subtle. It’s a time when nothing seems to attract attention, and for this very reason, every detail becomes precious. This is where photography stops being a technique and returns to being gesture and art.

You don’t need a large camera or a special lens. You need time. You need the willingness to pause. Photographing Lake Garda in winter means, first of all, learning to look slowly, letting the landscape decide when the right moment is. From our hotel, you can enjoy a breathtaking view in every season: from your lake-view room, you can even wait for the right moment, a particularly colorful sunset or sunrise, and capture that moment with a photograph.

Mornings are often silent, almost suspended. The water can be as still as glass, the boats seem to float in a simple design, the contours are soft. At these times, the light doesn’t create violent contrasts: it caresses. It’s a forgiving light, making everything more real and less spectacular, perfect for those who love intimate, collected, personal images.

When the fog arrives, the lake doesn’t hide: it suggests. The contours become uncertain, the distances shorten, the gaze focuses on what remains. A bare branch, a disappearing walkway, a slowly dissolving shore. Photographing in the fog means accepting imperfection, leaving room for the imagination, telling more than what’s visible.

In the afternoon, the winter sun sets early and transforms everything. The colors warm, the water reflects golden hues, the shadows lengthen. Even the simplest gestures become worthy of a snapshot: a slow walk, a coat draped over a bench, a glass of wine catching the last ray of light.

The secret, if there is one, is to stop looking for the “right photo.” Lake Garda in winter doesn’t like to be conquered. It loves to be accompanied.

Our special tip from a true local

There’s one place that, more than any other, speaks to all this. It’s Punta Staffalo, along the Poetic Remembrance Walk, right on the Sirmione peninsula. Here lies a small, secluded beach, far from the beaten track, which at sunset becomes one of the most evocative spots in winter, but also year-round.

The sun slowly sets over the water, the sky turns pink and orange, and the lake seems to open up before you, silently. It’s not a place for a quick snapshot, but for waiting. To be observed, even before being photographed. And perhaps that’s precisely why the images captured here linger so long in the memory.

If you’d like to experience this, stay at our Lugana Parco al Lago e Wine Hotel and reach Sirmione conveniently by bus, bike, or even on foot: our hotel is just 4 kilometers from the center of the Sirmione peninsula. Leave your car with us and experience the area in a more sustainable way!

Christmas on the lake, like with family

Christmas on Lake Garda, for us, is first and foremost about home.
It has never been a time of grand gestures or excess, but of daily attentions, of simple things done well, of time spent together. This is how we experience it at the Lugana Parco al Lago e Wine Hotel.

In December, the lake slows down, and so do we. The shores empty, the air becomes clearer, and everything seems to find a different balance. It’s the moment when Lake Garda regains its more intimate side, the one we’ve always known and that locals love most. Walking along the water means recognizing the rhythms of the seasons, observing the softer colors, listening to the silence that settles over the lake. And you can experience all this with a revitalizing stroll in our green lakefront park.

Christmas here is discreet, almost hushed. The villages light up without exaggerating, and the traditions remain the same, passed down from year to year. There’s the pleasure of greeting each other, of stopping for a chat, of rediscovering a sense of community that can sometimes be lost during the busiest months.

Christmas at the hotel is very similar to what we experience at home. The days begin calmly, with a leisurely breakfast. We talk about what we’ll be doing during the day, offer advice, and share our knowledge of the area. There are no rigid schedules, just the freedom to choose how to spend your time. The Municipality of Sirmione offers various activities: the ice skating rink, Christmas concerts with great musicians, but near us you can also discover the typical markets of the Veneto region, starting from Bardolino and Lazise and ending in Verona, with traditional stalls selling artisanal wool hats and freshly made sweets.

Even the evening is a time for sharing. The lights come on early, the atmosphere becomes more intimate, and the lake accompanies every conversation. It’s the kind of Christmas that invites you to be together, to talk, to rediscover the pleasures of simplicity. Our restaurant, La Lugana Trattoria, welcomes you with comforting traditional dishes in a quiet setting, with soft lighting and captivating glasses of wine. You can spend the holidays here with your loved ones, enjoying a special gourmet menu or grilled dishes, prepared in front of you.

Here’s the holiday menu:

Red Balance
Premium red salmon pavé, marinated in smoked pepper salt, glazed with honey and soy, served on a fennel and Tarocco orange emulsion.

Holiday Tradition
Carnaroli risotto, cream of lentils, and roasted cotechino cubes from the Moreniche Hills, creamed in sage butter.

Flavors of the Courtyard
Duck breast stuffed with bread and amaretti, wrapped in fat from the Moreniche Hills, roasted leeks, and a dark clementine base.

Sweet Christmas
Veneziana della Fenice with Tre Filer cream.

For us, opening the hotel doors in December means welcoming guests as if they were coming home. Offering a warm, quiet space where they can feel at ease. A leisurely Christmas on the lake, with the same spirit we share with our families.
