Birdwatching on Lake Garda: A Guide to Observing Birds in the Lower Lake Area

Lower Lake Garda is known for its villages, beaches and vineyards, but simply changing pace is enough to discover a different landscape. Reed beds, shores, small stretches of water and open fields are habitats frequented by waterbirds and migratory species. Birdwatching allows you to observe them without rushing: it requires no particular skill, only attention, distance and a little silence. And here, in our large park by the lake, you will find one of the most beautiful places to observe the local wildlife — and why not, even from the balcony of one of our lake-view rooms.

Autumn is a particularly interesting time. The days become quieter, the light is softer and migratory movements invite you to look beyond the surface of the lake. This guide offers a simple and respectful approach, suitable even for those who have never used binoculars before. In its southern part, the vast expanse of Lake Garda meets smaller-scale environments: vegetated shores, agricultural areas, canals and wetlands. This variety provides opportunities for different species to rest, feed and find shelter. There is no need to know all their names straight away: learning to distinguish a silhouette, a behaviour or a call is already a way of becoming part of the landscape. Wetlands are particularly valuable because they are home to resident, migratory and wintering waterbirds. They are also delicate environments, where uncontrolled access can cause disturbance. For this reason, responsible birdwatching means staying on permitted paths, using public observation points and accepting that some encounters will take place from a distance.

Laghetto del Frassino: a wetland worth discovering

South of Peschiera del Garda, just a few kilometres from our hotel, Laghetto del Frassino is recognised by the Veneto Region as a Natura 2000 site and Special Protection Area. It is a small lake of glacial origin set in a heavily frequented area, yet it preserves important habitats for birdlife. Its importance does not lie in spectacular scenery, but precisely in its ability to provide water, reed beds and tranquillity in a highly populated area. Before visiting, it is advisable to check access points, any restrictions and the condition of the paths on site. Some areas may be private or subject to specific rules. Birdwatching does not give permission to cross fences, enter fields or approach the shore outside the designated paths. A good observation point is one that allows you to watch without altering the animals’ behaviour. This location can also be easily reached by bicycle, by renting one of the electric bikes available to hotel guests at reception.

What you can observe

In a lakeside environment, you may encounter ducks, grebes, coots, moorhens, herons and small passerines associated with reed beds. The species present vary with the seasons and the conditions of the day. It is best to avoid lists presented as guaranteed sightings: uncertainty is part of the experience. A successful outing may simply mean spending a few minutes watching the way a grebe dives or a heron waits motionless.

When to go: morning, light and seasons

The early morning hours are often ideal: there is less activity around, the temperature is pleasant and many species are active. Late afternoon can also offer beautiful light, but in autumn it is important to plan your return carefully. After rain, paths and verges can be muddy; in strong winds the water becomes choppy, bird calls are harder to hear and it is more difficult to hold binoculars steady. In autumn and winter, migratory and wintering birds become particularly interesting to observe. In spring, breeding activity increases and keeping your distance becomes even more important. In summer, the heat makes short outings very early in the morning preferable. Every season has something to teach us, provided that waiting does not turn into an insistent search for a sighting.

What to bring on your first outing

  • Lightweight binoculars, easier to use for long periods than heavy equipment.
  • Clothing in discreet colours, footwear suitable for the terrain and a waterproof layer.
  • Water, sun protection and a small bird guide, either printed or digital.
  • A notebook to record the time, habitat, behaviour and weather conditions.
  • A phone set to silent, useful for maps and environmental photographs without getting too close.

You do not need a telephoto lens to get started. Binoculars teach you to observe; photography can come later. If you use a camera, it is better to miss a shot than to leave the path or cause an animal to move away.

How to observe without disturbing

The first sign to watch for is the animal’s behaviour. If it stops feeding, gives alarm calls, repeatedly moves away or changes direction to avoid us, we are too close. The right response is to step back calmly. Speaking quietly, moving slowly and limiting the amount of time spent in the same place reduces disturbance. Food or recorded calls should never be used to attract birds. Do not look for nests, move vegetation or publicly share the precise locations of sensitive species. Dogs should be kept according to local regulations, with particular care near reed beds and shorelines. All waste, including organic waste, should be taken away with us.

Silence is a tool, not a strict rule

Being silent does not mean making the outing rigid. It means giving yourself the chance to listen. A repeated call, the beating of wings or movement among the reeds often reveals a presence before you can see it. For children, it can become a simple game: counting the different sounds they hear for one minute without immediately trying to name them.

A slow itinerary, without collecting stops

From Lugana, you can dedicate half a day to birdwatching in the lower Lake Garda area, choosing just one environment and allowing yourself plenty of time. Before setting off, check the weather and accessibility; once there, use only public roads and paths and follow the available signs. A short stop along the lake can complete the outing, comparing the species seen in the wetland with those that frequent the open water.

How to identify a bird without being an expert

Start with the most noticeable characteristics: size, shape of the beak, length of the legs, profile in flight and the habitat it frequents. Then observe colours and markings, bearing in mind that light, distance, age and season can be misleading. Taking note of behaviour is very useful: does it swim with its body high or low in the water? Does it dive? Does it walk in shallow water? Does it remain perched among the reeds? If the identification remains uncertain, that is perfectly fine. Guides and apps can help afterwards, especially when your notes are precise.

Seeing Lake Garda from a different perspective

Birdwatching adds depth to a stay because it teaches us to notice what normally remains in the background. Its value lies not in the number of species observed, but in the quality of our attention. A protected wetland, a reed bed and a quiet shoreline remind us that the lake is also a living system, crossed by seasonal movements that begin very far away. Taking home a short list, a few notes and the memory of a behaviour calmly observed is already a rewarding result. On Lake Garda, sometimes the most interesting journey begins when we stop looking for a view and learn to wait.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time of year for birdwatching on Lake Garda?
Autumn and winter are particularly interesting for migration and wintering birds; spring and summer offer different kinds of activity. Early morning and late afternoon are often the quietest times of day.

Do I need professional equipment?
No. To get started, all you need is a pair of lightweight binoculars, suitable clothing, a guide and a notebook. The ability to remain still and observe is more important than a camera.

Is Laghetto del Frassino a protected area?
It is a Natura 2000 site and a Special Protection Area. Before visiting, you should check access points and local regulations, always remaining on permitted paths.

How can I tell if I am disturbing a bird?

Sirmione without a car: practical ideas for a relaxing half-day starting from Lugana

Visiting Sirmione without a car is often a smart choice, especially during the busiest months. The historic centre is compact, distances are easy to cover at a leisurely pace, and the landscape naturally invites you to slow down. Starting from Lugana, at the Lugana Parco al Lago & Wine Hotel, a well-planned half-day is enough to experience the lake with ease, avoiding complicated parking and unnecessary travel. Sirmione reveals its true charm when you don’t rush through it: a walk, a break in the shade, a glance across the water, a carefully chosen visit. Even just a few hours can become a complete experience when enjoyed at the right pace.

Why choose to visit Sirmione without a car

During the high season, driving to the most central areas of the town can take longer than expected. Traffic, the search for parking, and the summer heat can make a visit less enjoyable, when it is really meant to be experienced at a relaxed pace. Planning a half-day without a car helps reduce stress and allows you to enjoy every moment more fully. In our opinion, starting from Lugana makes it possible to approach the visit in a gentler and more relaxed way. You can choose to reach the historic centre by combining a walk with public transport, a taxi, or seasonal shuttle services, always checking the latest schedules and availability. Our reception team will be happy to provide you with all the information you need. Please also bear in mind that the Lake Garda area is not particularly well served by taxis, so waiting times can sometimes be long. The simplest rule is also the best one: plan ahead, set off early, or choose the late afternoon, when both the light and the temperature are at their most pleasant.

First stop: the rhythm of Lugana

Lugana has a character all its own, quite different from the historic centre of Sirmione. It is more relaxed, more authentic, closer to the vineyards and the quieter shores of the lake. Before heading towards the heart of the peninsula, it is worth taking a few moments to embrace the pace of the area: enjoy breakfast overlooking the lake, take a short walk, or simply pause to admire the morning light reflecting on the water. This first moment also helps set the tone for the day. Comfortable shoes, water, sun protection and a light bag are practical essentials in our area. During the warmer months, comfort is not just a detail—it is what allows you to enjoy your visit at a leisurely pace without getting tired. You can enjoy a beautiful walk from Lugana to the historic centre, or, if you prefer, stop and take one of the many shuttle buses that run along the route to reach the castle more quickly.

Towards the historic centre: arriving at a relaxed pace

The historic centre of Sirmione is its most iconic area, but also the one that requires the most care during the busiest days. For this reason, it is best to plan your arrival outside the peak hours, when the sun is at its highest and the streets are more crowded. An early morning visit offers a quieter atmosphere and unforgettable views of the lake for taking beautiful photographs, while the late afternoon rewards visitors with softer light. Once you reach the historic centre, our advice is not to rush from one attraction to another. Instead, enter at a leisurely pace and allow the landscape to reveal itself gradually. Scaliger Castle, the charming streets, the lakefront views, and the small detours—such as the lakeside walk starting from Spiaggia delle Muse—all work beautifully because they are so close to one another.

What to see in half a day

With only half a day available, it is better to choose two or three experiences rather than trying to see everything, perhaps leaving something for a future visit to explore the town more thoroughly. A possible itinerary includes entering the historic centre, strolling through Scaliger Castle, taking a break in one of the quieter streets, and enjoying the lake views from the Grotte di Catullo. Those with more energy can continue towards the panoramic areas of the peninsula, always considering the time available, the temperature, and the number of visitors. The Grotte di Catullo are one of the area’s highlights, but they require time and should be visited without haste. If you only have half a day, it may be better to save them for another occasion, as they are located at the top of one of the three hills that form the peninsula. Since cars are not allowed, they can only be reached on foot or by the tourist train.

A break, water and shade: the practical side

On summer days, a pleasant visit is also built around taking breaks. Stopping does not mean wasting time—it means preserving your energy. A pause for a drink, a light lunch, an ice cream or a coffee can become part of the experience, especially if enjoyed away from the busiest times. It is advisable to alternate between sun and shade, plan your route in advance using a map, and ask our reception team for advice. Avoid long walks during the hottest hours and always allow yourself some flexibility. If the historic centre feels too crowded, you can shorten your visit and spend more time by the lake and on its beautiful beaches, such as Lido delle Bionde, or return to Lugana for a quieter break and enjoy the lovely beach behind the village church.

A possible 4-hour itinerary

For a relaxing morning, you could start with breakfast in Lugana at La Fenice, the area’s iconic Liberty-style café, then head towards the historic centre on foot or by bus. Spend around an hour and a half wandering through the castle, the picturesque streets and the lakeside viewpoints, enjoy a short break (avoiding the expensive tourist ice creams that are not artisan-made), and return before the hottest part of the day. For an afternoon visit, you could have lunch at La Lugana Trattoria, arrive in the historic centre as the light softens, stroll without hurry and finish with a boat tour departing from the right-hand side of the castle, offering beautiful views of Scaliger Castle from the lake. This itinerary does not require strict timing; it is simply a suggestion. The important thing is to check transport services, weather conditions and actual travel times on the day of your visit. Our reception team will be happy to assist you with up-to-date information, maps and many other ideas for discovering the area, including our electric bicycles available for hire. Lake Garda changes dramatically between weekdays and weekends, between low and high season, and between morning and evening—and for us, it is always magical.

The value of returning with a little less. Whenever possible, travelling without a car changes the way you experience a place. You walk more, notice more details and naturally become more respectful of your surroundings. In Sirmione, this approach works perfectly because the beauty lies not only in the destination itself, but also in the views, the lakeshore, the changing light and the quiet pauses along the way. Spending half a day without a car may seem like a practical decision, but it is also a different way of travelling: less forced planning, greater attention to the landscape and, even better, exploring by electric bicycle (available for hire at our reception), an environmentally friendly choice that encourages a slower rhythm of travel. Starting from Lugana, the historic centre is only about 4 kilometres away, while the return journey brings you back to a quieter area where the lake resumes its own peaceful rhythm.

Why we chose Lugana: our history of lake, wine, and hospitality

When people ask us what makes the Lugana Parco al Lago & Wine Hotel special, we never have a single answer. Perhaps because we’re more than just a hotel on Lake Garda. We’re a place that speaks to a region, a family, and a lifestyle rooted in the Lugana area and the waters of Lake Garda. Those who come to us are often looking for a hotel in Lugana di Sirmione, perhaps a lakeside property where they can enjoy a few days of relaxation. What they discover, however, is something more: an experience of relaxation, sunsets, good wine, and family authenticity.

A hotel on Lake Garda where the lake truly takes center stage

Our two hotels are located directly on the shores of Lake Garda, facing each other, with a large private green park that reaches right down to the water and a pier that extends into the water, overlooking the Sirmione peninsula. Here, the lake isn’t just a view from the window. It’s the place to stroll in the morning, relax in the afternoon—perhaps with a dip in the park’s pool—and be amazed by the colors of the sunset. Many guests choose us because they want a hotel with direct private access to the lake, away from the crowds yet close to the beauty of Sirmione. It’s precisely this balance between tranquility and strategic location that makes the stay special.

In the heart of the Lugana region

We are in Lugana di Sirmione, one of the areas most loved by wine and food lovers. Our connection to this region is part of our identity. The vineyards surrounding the town tell a story of tradition, family, and a passion for wine. The Dal Cero family has also been working on this land since 1939, producing wines at the renowned Ca’ dei Frati winery, a global leader in Lugana DOC. This is why we also call ourselves a Wine Hotel on Lake Garda: because we believe that getting to know a region means savoring it, meeting it, and experiencing it through its excellence. And we do this by offering unique and authentic food and wine experiences. Tastings, cellar tours, and wine tours with the family’s sommelier allow our guests to discover the most authentic soul of Lugana.

Hospitality born from a family

Behind every stay are people, stories, and thoughtful touches you can’t see in photographs. For generations, our family has welcomed travelers from all over the world with the same philosophy: making every guest feel at home, even in a special place. We like to think that true luxury today is time. Time for breakfast overlooking the lake, a stroll in the park, a glass of Lugana at sunset, a leisurely dinner just a few meters from the lake, or a bike ride in the surrounding area with our e-bike rental.

La Fenice: the Taste of Garda

Complementary to our hotel, at the same address, are two gastronomic offerings: the La Fenice bistro and La Lugana Trattoria, which represent another important part of our history. The cuisine showcases the flavors of the Garda region, taking guests on a gastronomic journey that combines tradition and creativity. Dining on the lake, just steps from the water, means experiencing Garda with all your senses. It’s an experience that many of our guests remember as one of the highlights of their holiday.

A starting point for discovering Garda

Staying at the Lugana Parco al Lago & Wine Hotel also means being in an ideal location for visiting Sirmione, as well as Desenzano del Garda, Peschiera, Verona, Brescia, and the area’s main attractions. Many choose our hotel as a base for exploring the southern part of Lake Garda, alternating days dedicated to exploring the area with moments of relaxation in the park and on the lake. Gardaland is also about ten kilometers from our hotel.

Our way of welcoming

We never wanted to be just a hotel. We wanted to create a place where the lake, wine, nature, and hospitality could come together in an authentic way. Every day, we continue to care for this little corner of Garda with the same passion as always, because we believe that the most beautiful holidays are those that leave a lasting impression. And that’s exactly what we hope to offer to those who choose to stay here, even if just for a few days.

The thermal baths of Sirmione: history and benefits of the thermal water of Lake Garda

Sirmione is famous worldwide not only for its castle, the historic center on the strip of land in the water, and the Grottoes of Catullus, but also for its unique thermal waters, used for centuries for personal wellness and body care.
Staying on Lake Garda also means allowing yourself a relaxing break at the thermal baths of Sirmione, easily reachable from Lugana. For those staying at the Wine Hotel Lugana Parco al Lago or at the Hotel Lugana Parco al Lago, the thermal baths are truly just a few minutes away, perfect for a day dedicated to wellness or for thermal treatments prescribed by a doctor.

The origin of the thermal baths of Sirmione

The beneficial properties of the thermal water of Sirmione have been known since ancient times. Already in Roman times, the peninsula was considered a special place for its climate and its waters. This is evidenced by the presence of the remains of a Roman villa dated between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD, the so-called Grottoes of Catullus. However, the Romans, contrary to what is usually thought, did not yet exploit the potential of the thermal water of Sirmione because the source was actually discovered many centuries later.

The thermal spring originates over 2,000 meters deep, where rainwater makes a very long underground journey through the rocks of the mountains. During this journey it becomes enriched with sulfur and minerals, then emerging near the peninsula of Sirmione at a temperature of about 69°C. The first demonstration of the presence of the hot water aquifer was done by an ingenious diver, Procopio, who managed to cook raw eggs, bringing them to the surface ready to be eaten hard-boiled.

This water is known as salsobromoiodic sulfur water, a rare composition that makes it particularly valuable for wellness.

Sulfur water of Garda

The thermal water of Sirmione is among the richest in Europe in sulfur, bromine, and iodine, natural elements that contribute to its therapeutic effects.
This particular composition makes it ideal for:

  • the wellness of the respiratory system
  • muscle relaxation
  • skin regeneration
  • improvement of circulation

The natural warmth of the water, combined with the minerals present, creates an experience that unites care and relaxation, immersed in the unique scenery of Lake Garda.

The benefits of the thermal experience

In addition to therapeutic properties, the thermal baths of Sirmione are today also a place dedicated to wellness and relaxation.
Among thermal pools, wellness paths, and lake-view relaxation areas, a day at the thermal baths allows you to:

  • reduce stress and tension
  • improve sleep
  • relax muscles
  • regenerate mind and body

The warm waters, especially in the cooler months, create a pleasant contrast with the lake air, making the experience even more evocative, which you can enjoy just a few kilometers from our facilities.

The two thermal experiences of Sirmione

Those visiting Sirmione can choose between two different thermal experiences.

Terme Virgilio located in Colombare di Sirmione (reachable on foot from our hotels, about 500 meters)
Located in the Colombare area, they are easily reachable from Lugana.

Here you can mainly find therapeutic paths and medical treatments, dedicated to health and body care.

Aquaria Thermal SPA (reachable by bus, bicycle, or taxi from our facilities)
Located in the historic center of Sirmione, Aquaria is a true lake-view wellness center, with indoor and outdoor thermal pools, saunas, Turkish baths, and relaxation areas immersed in the Garda landscape.

A stay among lake, wine, and wellness

For those who wish to combine relaxation, nature, and exploration of the territory, staying in the Lugana area is the ideal solution, also to stay away from traffic and the densest tourism that characterizes the historic center, especially during high season periods.

The Wine Hotel Lugana Parco al Lago and the Hotel Lugana Parco al Lago are just a few minutes from the Thermal Baths of Sirmione and represent a perfect starting point for a day dedicated to wellness and thermal treatments.

After a few hours of relaxation in the thermal waters, it is pleasant to return to the lake, walk among the Lugana vineyards, or enjoy a glass of wine from Ca’ dei Frati at sunset at La Fenice Bistot or La Lugana Trattoria, where guests can also receive a 5% discount.

An experience that combines wellness, territory, and the atmosphere of Garda.

Christmas Markets: A Journey Through Lights, Crafts, and Sweetness

Among the most popular Advent activities on Lake Garda are undoubtedly the Christmas markets: wooden huts, decorations, traditional sweets, children’s workshops, and that festive atmosphere that invites you to smile and discover.

Where to go from our hotels:

  • Lazise(about 18 km / 20 minutes by car from our hotel): one of the largest markets on the lower lake, with dozens of stalls, an ice skating rink, children’s workshops, and Christmas street food.

Why it’s perfect for families

The markets aren’t just about shopping: they’re experiences to be enjoyed together. You can choose a day to dedicate to this activity, perhaps in the morning or afternoon, and make the visit a special moment for each family member: parents explore the stalls, children participate in workshops or meet Santa Claus, and everyone can enjoy a break together with a hot chocolate or a traditional mulled wine. The return to the hotel will be a relaxing moment, shared with a quiet evening at our bistro, La Fenice, or La Lugana Trattoria.

Relaxation and well-being: winter pampering on the lake

The lake offers a wealth of wellness opportunities even in winter: thermal spas, hot tubs, and breathtaking views. Practical Tips

  • Bring comfortable swimsuits and bathrobes: the afternoon hours are ideal after a walk or the market.

  • Choose a quieter evening at the hotel: perhaps with a special dinner to round off the experience. the atmosphere.

Winter walks and atmosphere: the lake in a different light

The true luxury of winter on the lake is the slow pace: the days are shorter, the light is softer, and the landscape takes on a calm unseen in summer, not to mention the colors that nature bestows on the lake. A stroll along the lakeside at sunset, perhaps stopping for a snack or to take some photos at La Fenice Pasticceria Bistrot, becomes a moment of simple happiness.
From our hotel, you also have the opportunity to explore nearby towns like Desenzano del Garda and Peschiera del Garda (both ≈ 10 km) or Bardolino (≈ 25 km), which offer enchanting views, streets adorned with lights, and an enveloping serenity.

Choosing the Hotel Lugana Parco al Lago & Wine Hotel means opting for a comfortable, welcoming stay in a strategic location:

  • You’re at the southern end of the lake, convenient to the main markets and services, yet immersed in a peaceful setting. The bus stop is just 20 meters from our facilities: you can easily reach the towns on the Brescia and Verona shores, as far as Brescia or Verona, with the same bus.

    • Dates: The markets usually start in late November and continue until Epiphany or early January.

Autumn on Lake Garda is a magical time: the warm colors of nature reflect on the water, the air becomes cooler, and the table is enriched with new seasonal flavors. It’s the perfect season for a food and wine weekend on Lake Garda, including wine tastings and typical specialties like chestnuts and mushrooms. Here’s a 3-day itinerary that combines authentic experiences, local flavors, and wines from the Ca’ dei Frati winery, to discover Garda through the senses.

Day 1 – Chestnuts and white wine

Start your journey with a stroll through the villages of Lake Garda and the surrounding hills, where chestnut festivals are celebrated in autumn. Day 2 – Mushrooms and intense reds

The second day is dedicated to mushrooms, the undisputed protagonists of autumn cuisine. Porcini risotto, tagliatelle with mixed mushrooms, and white truffle dishes become the perfect opportunity to taste Ronchedone, a full-bodied and spicy red wine from Ca’ dei Frati.

The pairing of the aromatic richness of the mushrooms and the structure of the wine creates a harmonious encounter, capable of enhancing every bite.

Pair your tasting with local products such as cured meats, cheeses, and honey from the moraine hills. An authentic way to capture the essence of autumn on Lake Garda.

And if you want to continue your journey through flavors, you can also discover typical seasonal dishes at the Lugana Trattoria and the Bistrot La Fenice, both located very close to the Hotel Lugana Parco al Lago & Wine Hotel.

Villages to discover: the authentic soul of the Lugana hinterland

Staying at the Lugana Parco al Lago Hotel or the Wine Hotel means abandoning yourself to the gentle beauty of the lake, but also having the opportunity to discover places that preserve the most authentic soul of the Garda area. Just a few minutes’ drive from the hotels, truly unexpected landscapes unfold: medieval villages, vineyards stretching to the horizon, and hills seemingly swaying in the sun. Each visit becomes a sensory journey, filled with unforgettable panoramas, scents, and flavors.

About a twenty-minute drive away, time seems to stand still in Borghetto sul Mincio. Here, the river flows slowly past watermills and stone houses, creating a picture-postcard atmosphere. Strolling across the Visconteo Bridge, while the breeze carries the scent of the water and the birdsong at sunset, is an experience that speaks to the heart. Stopping along the river means being enveloped in a romantic atmosphere, where every detail seems designed to move.

Closer to the hotel, just ten minutes by car or twenty minutes by bike for a more eco-friendly option, lies Pozzolengo, nestled between moraine hills and vineyards. Here, the air smells of must and earth, and the landscape is a mosaic of tidy fields and ancient farmhouses. A stroll through its narrow streets leads to the medieval castle, which offers a panoramic view of the hills and the lake in the distance.

A little further on, after about a quarter of an hour’s drive, you’ll come across Castellaro Lagusello, a small jewel guarded by medieval walls. Its heart-shaped lake is the symbol of this village, and walking along its shores, listening to the rustling of reeds and the distant tolling of bells, is a moment that fills the soul with peace. Castellaro is a suspended place, inviting you to slow down and enjoy the simple beauty of a stroll among the stone houses.

Finally, about twenty minutes from the hotels, you reach Solferino, a place that combines history and poetry. Here, the stones tell the story of the great battle of 1859 for the unification of Italy (the famous clash between San Martino and Solferino), but simply climbing to the Rocca (fortress) is enough to find yourself surrounded by a breathtaking panorama. From above, the gaze sweeps across the moraine hills, the tidy vineyards, and, on clear days, all the way to the distant mountain profile. It’s a vantage point from which to truly sense the grandeur and harmony of this land.

Starting from the Lugana Parco al Lago Hotel and the Wine Hotel, these villages can be intertwined in an itinerary that offers emotions at every stop: in the morning, among the vineyards of Pozzolengo, in the afternoon strolling among the walls and hidden lakes of Castellaro and Solferino, and finally in the evening, enveloped in the magic of Borghetto, before returning to the hotel, with the colors of the sunset still in our eyes and the memory of a special day in our hearts.

    • Length: about 2.5 km (one way)
    • Suitable for: bikes, strollers, walkers of all ages
    • Tip: rent an electric bike in Limone and combine the cycle path with a visit to the historic center

    2. The lakeside of Desenzano and Padenghe

Among Art Nouveau villas, gardens and free beaches

This flat and well-kept stretch of the lower lake is perfect for a relaxing walk or a quiet bike ride. Starting from the port of Desenzano, you will follow the lake towards Rivoltella and then Padenghe, with the possibility of bathing stops or picnics overlooking the water.

    • Length: about 6-8 km round trip
    • Suitable for: family walks or light bikes
    • Points of interest: Villa Romana, Spiaggia d’Oro, ice cream parlors and kiosks on the lakefront

      3. The Mincio cycle path: from Peschiera to Borghetto

A timeless classic, between nature and fairy-tale villages

One of the most popular cycling routes: starting from Peschiera del Garda and following the Mincio river to the medieval village of Borghetto sul Mincio, passing through bucolic landscapes and rows of poplars.

      • Length: 15 km (one way)
      • Suitable for: city bikes or e-bikes, also for families
      • Tip: have lunch in Borghetto and return calmly in the afternoon. It could be a bit chaotic at the weekend.

      4. The Ponale Trail (for the more curious)

A hike with a lake view carved into the rock

If you’re looking for something a little more adventurous but still accessible, the Sentiero del Ponale, from Riva del Garda to the Ledro Valley, is an unmissable experience. An ancient military trail that winds through tunnels, hairpin bends and breathtaking views.

      • Suitable for: walkers, mountain bikes, e-bikes
      • Good to know: bring a torch to go through some tunnels

      5. Panoramic walk from Sirmione to Jamaica Beach

Relaxation and photographic views just a stone’s throw from the historic center

Sirmione, a dream that changes with the seasons

Imagine a thin strip of land that gently extends into the clear waters of Lake Garda. It is Sirmione, the most romantic jewel of the lake, a place suspended in time where every season reveals a new wonder.

Spring: the awakening of the senses

When the air becomes warm and the first flowers bloom among the gardens and walls of the historic center, Sirmione awakens in all its sweetness. It is the ideal time to stroll through the cobbled streets, observe the local fauna on the lakeside and visit the Scaligero Castle, which with its drawbridge seems to have come out of a fairy tale. It is a construction that was already present in Roman times, with a defensive and control function in the direction of the lake.
Do not miss a visit to the wonderful Grotte di Catullo, ancient Roman ruins of an ancient villa of leisure overlooking the water: here, among the olive trees and the stones warmed by the sun, you can breathe the poetry of Catullus, whose family seems to have lived here in ancient times – in the villa preceding the one visible.

        Summer: light, water and scents

Summer in Sirmione is an ode to the pleasures of water and light. Beaches like Jamaica Beach, with its white slabs that slide into the blue of the lake, become magical places to relax or dive into the embrace of Garda.
The village comes alive with markets, events and outdoor evenings: it is the perfect time to visit Sirmione with the golden reflections at sunset.
During the day Sirmione is also well connected by the Navigarda navigation network that connects the village several times a day with other towns on the lake, all beautiful to visit and rich in history.

        Autumn: colors and silences

When the leaves begin to turn gold and red, Sirmione becomes quieter and more intimate. It is the ideal season for those seeking relaxation and well-being, away from the most touristy moments of the year: the Terme di Sirmione, renowned since Roman times, offer beneficial sulphurous waters and breathtaking views. Stroll through the vineyards of lower Garda, take part in a tasting of Lugana DOC at our Ca’ dei Frati winery and let yourself be lulled by the silence of the lake… Autumn here is a caress on the soul.

        Winter: quiet and enchantment

Even in winter, Sirmione retains its beauty. The Christmas lights that adorn the castle, the famous fireworks, the intimate atmosphere of the village, the vapors that rise from the thermal waters when the cold becomes biting: everything invites you to slow down, to contemplate. It is the moment to find yourself, between the warmth of a homemade hot chocolate at our Pasticceria La Fenice and a walk to the “fisherman’s house” among the romantic mists of the lake.

        An invitation to be enchanted

Sirmione is not just a destination: it is an invitation to dream. Whether you come in spring or winter, every visit will always be different, every memory unique. We look forward to seeing you to experience your special moment on Lake Garda in our facilities Wine Hotel Lugana Parco al Lago or Hotel Lugana Parco al Lago.
From our facilities you can easily reach the peninsula in various ways: by bicycle, about 15-20 minutes of pedaling, renting the vehicle at our reception; by bus, the stop is right in front of our hotels; by taxi, in this case contact the reception to reserve it in advance; on foot, a long but beautiful walk, almost all along the lake, if you have half a day free.
